A Quick Bit of Background
Laser hair removal targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle, converting light energy into heat that damages the follicle. Historically it worked best on pale skin with dark hair, because the laser needed strong contrast to target the follicle safely. But technology has come a very long way since then.
The Fitzpatrick Scale
Therapists assess suitability using the Fitzpatrick Scale, which classifies skin into six types from very fair (Type I) to dark brown or black (Type VI), based on tone and how it responds to UV exposure. Older laser systems struggled with Types IV–VI, as they found it harder to distinguish pigment in the skin from pigment in the hair.

Does Hair Colour Matter Too?
